Support To Living With Floods In Chikwawa District, Lower Shire Valley, Malawi

CP Outcome 2.2 of the One Plan Malawi (2009-2011) states ‘Government will have disaster risk reduction and emergency management systems and practices for efficient response at national and sub-national levels’. Under this Outcome, Cluster 2 agreed on intervention to support communities in moderately flooded areas to build houses that are better able to withstand moderate flooding.  UN-HABITAT is responsible for this output and this project document has been developed accordingly.

The overall goal is to reduce vulnerability to floods of communities living in low lands prone to low and moderate flooding by-reinforcing local capacities and applying sustainable coping solutions through innovative small-scale mitigation interventions for floods to support the alternative strategy of Living with Floods rather than relocation.
