The purpose of the Rapid Planning project is to develop transferable and as far as possible universal concepts and methodologies summarising and describing the relevant steps and elements of trans-sectoral urban and regional planning of UBS infrastructure, as well as the necessary administrative framework.

The rapid planning project will be implemented on basis of three case cities, including Da Nang (Vietnam), Kigali (Rwanda), Assiut (Egypt); and Frankfurt/Main (Germany) as reference city. Besides the necessary interest and commitment of the case cities to participate in rapid planning project, the case cities were chosen regarding their development level (economic conditions, living conditions, etc.) and other relevant framework conditions somehow representing the majority of urban structures on global level.

In addition to the representativeness, it is also intended to establish an exchange of experiences and know-how between the case cities (South-South-Cooperation plus exchange with Frankfurt/ Main). The interest of Frankfurt/ Main to participate in Rapid Planning shows that also in developed countries there is still a need for improved (trans-sectoral) planning processes. A wider group of observer cities will be created for Sub-Sahara Africa, the Arab States as well as Asia. In this way the planning methodologies can be further access for the applicability in the regional context.

UN-Habitat will be assuming a important role of connecting consortium partners, cities and stakeholders involved.
