The objective of WCD is to raise the international awareness of urbanization trends, challenges and visions for sustainable urban development, to promote international cooperation and make contributions to the global efforts in building equitable, prosperous and sustainable cities and improving people's living environment and quality.

UN-Habitat aims to introduce World Cities Day as a forum where sustainable urban development will be at the forefront of the global agenda, where we raise awareness of the challenges that we need to address to improve human settlements worldwide.

World Cities Day will be a platform for national governments, local authorities, private sectors, academia, NGO's, to better tackle urbanization challenges.

UN-Habitat will provide expertise and the technical know-how towards finding solutions to challenges of rapid urbanization. Stakeholders in this process include national and local governments who share best practices.

The city of Shanghai will directly benefit as it will gain knowledge and experience on how to undertake sustainable urban development together with UN-Habitat.
