Improving Water Supply, Sanitation And Hygiene Promotion In Peri- Urban Areas Of Mzuzu City And Karonga Town In Malawi

The  project acknowledges the fact the uirban poor people if not well served with water supply and sanitation services by the authorities, they spend a lot of money to access such services and much more is spent through treating sicknesses associated with water and sanitation. To this effect, the purpose of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction in Malawi by achieving sustainable water supply and sanitation (MDG 7c).

Specifically the project aims at addressing the following elements of the problem:

Access to sustainable water supply in 1 (informal settlement in Mzuzu City and 2 settlements in Karonga Town expanded)

§  Demand for  basic/improved sanitation facilities in 10 schools and 1 informal settlements in Mzuzu city and in 8 schools and 2 settlements in Karonga Town increased

CLTS/SLTS triggering and awareness of hygiene practices improve the sanitation and health conditions in beneficiary peri-urban communities and schools

Adequate local institutional and community capacity for the management and operation of water and sanitation services in place

The targeted populations in informal settlement areas including community members and school going children will directly benefit under the project through improved access to sustainable safe water and sanitation services and also vulnerable community groups will be engaged in the management of public sanitation as a strategy to empower them economically.

The possible partners will include; the community members, Mzuzu City Council, Karonga District Council, Northern Region Water Board, CCODE and Malawi Red Cross.

This project is designed to enhance investments of water and sanitation infrastructure in informal settlement areas in a bid to minimize the challenges that urban poor people s face. The project will involve relevant stakeholders in the targeted towns who are key in provision of water supply and sanitation services to their focus towards improved and intensified service delivery to informal urban settlements which provides habitat to about 80% of the urban population.

Un Habitat will provide knowledge management in the project and overall coordination to ensure that all set objectives and milestones are adequately met.
