Emergency Wash Services In Areas Of Returnees In Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata), Pakistan

The main objective of the project is to ensure that the returning population have adequate access to clean water, sanitation facilities and basic life-saving knowledge of hygiene practices to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases in their areas of return. Returnees will be provided with safe drinking water, will have access to adequate sanitation facilities or mobilized for improved sanitation coverage, and will be reached with appropriate hygiene messages as required by UNICEF's IPs.

UN-Habitat's proposed project will pay special attention to the provision of immediate WASH assistance addressing the lifesaving needs of 3000 most vulnerable returnee families (18,000 individuals including  5,284 women,  5,069 men,  3,820 girls below 18years of age and  3,677 boys below 18 years of age) in the Upper Kurram  Area of Kurram Agency in FATA, Pakistan.

WASH assistance will be coordinated with the WASH Cluster and will be harmonized among all the beneficiaries targeted by the cluster partners under this CERF funding. At the minimum, WASH assistance will cover:

·         Rehabilitation of existing water supply systems (public and community owned)

·         Rehabilitation and installation of hand pumps

·         Water quality monitoring and surveillance and water treatment

·         Rehabilitation of sanitation facilities at community level

·         Provision of sanitation kit to most vulnerable families to support the construction of basic latrine to minimize the health risks associated with open defecation

·         Provision of health and hygiene kits to all the families

·         Support to community-based hygiene promotion using multiple communication methods targeting men, women, elderly and disabled.

The CERF life-saving criteria for WASH interventions emphasize on provision of minimum requirements of water, sanitation and hygiene standards in emergency situations. The criteria will be incorporated in the project design to ensure assistance for most vulnerable families.

UN-Habitat will engage a team of management, social mobilisation, engineering and monitoring to speed up a timely deliverance of life saving WASH services to the returnees.
