Profiling Migration Impact On Lebanese Cities

The project is needed as it addresses:

Urban development challenges in four key cities in Lebanon triggered by massive refugee influx triggered by Syrian crisis (Beirut, Tripoli, Tyre, Saida), including their metropolitan areas, which host more than 60% of the Lebanese population, 90% of Palestinian refugees and almost 40% of Syrian refugees.

The lack of national data, statistics and analysis on the state of the key cities and specifically on the impact of migrant influx on urban areas on all sectors. Moreover, available data is somewhat scattered and/or outdated.

Existing rules and regulatory frameworks are obsolete and do not take into consideration the changes in the demographic structures of the country and the impact mainly on cities due to the increased number of migrants.

National and local policies to cope with the arising challenges are lacking, and thus current adopted policies do not reflect the realities and needs on the ground.

Interventions by humanitarian actors are focused on direct needs of refugees, yet interventions which address migrants as integrated actors which very much impact and are impacted by the city on the short and long-term remain minimal.
