Alternative And Sustainable Urban Solid Waste Management In Ethiopia: Implementation Of The Fukuoka Method In Bahir Dar City

It is against the above background that the City Administration of Bahir Dar and UN-Habitat have agreed to cooperate for improving the solid waste management (SWM) situation of the city and its environs. In this context, the general objective of this UN-Habitat proposal is to provide technical assistance and transfer knowledge to the City Administration for applying the Fukuoka Method in Bahir Dar.

The specific objectives of the proposed assignment are:

1.      Following the requirements of the Fukuoka Method, to revise the detailed designs of the new sanitary land fill, and prepare the detailed designs for closing and treating the existing dumping site and for installing the common leachate treatment pond;

2.      To provide technical and managerial support for constructing the semi-aerobic sanitary landfill, phasing out and final closure of the existing dumping site, and installing the common leachate treatment pond;

3.      To prepare a SWM strategy for Bahir Dar through consultations with the different stakeholders, and develop implementation guidelines;

4.      To prepare and deliver a programme to progressively strengthen the institutional capacity needed to implement the Fukuoka Method and improve the overall delivery of SWM services in Bahir Dar.
