It is against the
above background that the City Administration of Bahir Dar and UN-Habitat have
agreed to cooperate for improving the solid waste management (SWM) situation of
the city and its environs. In this context, the general objective of this
UN-Habitat proposal is to provide technical assistance and transfer knowledge
to the City Administration for applying the Fukuoka Method in Bahir Dar.
The specific objectives of the proposed
assignment are:
1. Following
the requirements of the Fukuoka Method, to revise the detailed designs of the
new sanitary land fill, and prepare the
detailed designs for closing and treating the existing dumping site
and for installing the common leachate treatment pond;
2. To
provide
technical and managerial support for constructing the semi-aerobic sanitary
landfill, phasing out and final closure of the existing dumping site, and
installing the common leachate treatment pond;
3. To
prepare a SWM strategy for Bahir Dar through consultations with the different
stakeholders, and develop implementation guidelines;
4. To
prepare and deliver a programme to progressively strengthen the institutional
capacity needed to implement the Fukuoka Method and improve the overall
delivery of SWM services in Bahir Dar.
