The purpose of this project is to provide technical
support to Addis Ababa City Administration to urgently respond to the highly
dangerous current situation of the solid waste management system in the city by
applying the Fukuoka Method as urgent and sustainable solution.
UN-Habitat has supported a
number of projects and programmes in Ethiopia since 1998 including water and
sanitation, urban profiling, urban mobility, capacity building. Recent projects
in Addis Ababa include the State of Addis Ababa 2017 Report, Technical support
to development of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), a Public Space project and the
development of the Resilience Framework for Action for Lideta sub-city.
Importantly, in November 2016,
a MoU was signed between UN-Habitat and the Addis Ababa City Administration, in
which provision of technical support for improved SWM is highlighted as key
area of collaboration.
Further, the proposed project
clearly aligns with UN-Habitat Country programme Document for Ethiopia.
In addition, based on its long
term global agreement with the Fukuoka University, UN-Habitat has been
advocating for and implementing the Fukuoka Method as a solution to the
challenges of Solid Waste Management in several cities in the world.
Considering the existing
strong collaboration with the Addis Ababa city Government, UN-Habitat is well positioned
to provide adequate response to the current situation in Addis Ababa, in order
to quickly decrease the level of dangerousness of the old dump site.
