Supporting School Disaster Prevention & Bbb Reconstruction Phase Ii

This project aims to increase children’s and community’ safety in settlements exposed to natural hazards and disaster-prone areas by making the primary school building more resistant and structurally sound, so they can resist the impact of natural hazards and function as a shelter to the community. This will be done by capitalizing the results achieved in the first phase (2015-2017), during which field pilots and mainstreaming DRR thoroughly improved practices and building codes for the MINEDH and its construction programmes. Project specific objectives are: (i) To strengthen the central and local level capacities to respond to, adapt, and mitigate the impact of natural disasters on schools through the implementation of rapid building-back-better reconstruction principles and child-friendly WASH facilities. This will be done through the delivery of technical assistance during the early recovery phase and by availing mixed construction materials, improved models, and local techniques better resistant to natural hazards. (ii) To support disaster school prevention through the expansion of the Basic School Emergency Plans (BESP) with the purpose of promoting a systematic practice on disaster management at the school level by preparing user friendly tools for children and teachers on emergency preparedness.  The BESP is aligned with the school reconstruction component mentioned above and brings a significant value-added incorporating non-structural component on disaster management during reconstruction process.(iii) To continuously strengthen the awareness at high political level on the importance of school safety and disaster resistant public infrastructure, in order to incorporate the sustainable reconstruction into all sectors, mainly through ministries, UN agencies, donors as well humanitarian organizations.
