Supporting Penang State Government In Localizing The Sdgs And The New Urban Agenda

In accordance with the shared goals of both UN-Habitat and the Penang State Government this project aims to enhance sustainable urbanization within Penang, through supporting the ongoing implementation of the New Urban Agenda and urban dimensions of the 2030 Agenda. This is a crucial initiative for Penang because of the increasingly rapid rate of urbanisation within the State and throughout Malaysia. According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, the level of urbanization in Penang is among the highest in the country, sitting at 90.8 percent. This figure highlights the importance of addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanization specifically in regard to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda. Within this context it is of the utmost importance that governments and policy makers make sure urban growth is sustainable and supports the 2030 Agenda, to ensure the effective adaptation of communities and infrastructure to climate change, increase urban resilience and safeguard equal access to basic resources, and mobility.
